· Here is an update from NKHS Athletics:

Weekly Athletic Update

Congratulations to Finley Kincaid, for being named a 2013 Academic All American by US Lacrosse!

The NK Baseball Team had a great game against Barrington on Tuesday night. Tyler Lamarre hit a 2 run home run. Austin Barry and Chris Hess each drove in two runs. They will be playing this Saturday at 2:00 at Lishio Field.

The Girls' Softball Team: Coventry edged North Kingstown, 4-3, in the Division I playoffs at R.I. College. The Skippers will host Bay View on Thursday at 4 p.m.

Volleyball Update from Captain Aidan Murphy: "When it came time for our game against South on Thursday, we came prepared. Their primary hitter, and outside attacker, may be intimidating at first glance, but he was no match for our right side and middle blockers for a majority of the game. We crushed South in the first game with, at one point, a ten point lead, 16-6. We went on to keep a solid lead sweep the first game. Later, they proved to be a challenge in the second game, taking victory away from us. By the third game, they were looking tired, and their primary outside hitter was lacking in kills due to Bobby Campbell and joint efforts by Alex Quarella and Grant Lewandowski on the outside block. This game, as well as the fourth were tight until the end, but we arose victorious, after suffering a loss from them earlier in the season. Paul Pederzani was on par with his passing efforts, as well as saving the ball from the possibility of losing a point. Garret Bucklin and James O'Donnell helped pack away the win with their monstrous kills."

The Volleyball Team lost to Mt. St. Charles in the playoffs in 5 games.

AN UPDATE FROM NKHS Athletics:

SPRING SPORTS AWARDS WILL BE HELD ON JUNE 12TH AT 6:00.

The Spring season is coming to an end but we still have several teams competing for championships. Try to get out and catch a playoff game in the upcoming weeks, the athletes and coaches would love to have the support.

At the very least you can watch the coach Libby show Sunday at Ryan Park as the softball team takes on Westerly in the second round of the playoffs. Game time is 4:00. While he is entertaining to watch, Adam has done an excellent job coaching these girls. Adam in his tenure so far at NK has taken the softball team to 3 state championships and is working on getting in there again this year. His efforts this year have awarded him the RI Softball Coach of the Year. Please congratulate him when you see him in the halls. His dedication to the girls and sport here at NK is invaluable.

Baseball is entering into the playoffs with their first game this Saturday at NK's Lischio Field, game time is 4:00. Coach Gormley has just led his team to its seventh straight Division 1 championship. In such a competitive sport with so many athletes specializing, it is amazing Coach Gormley continues to be on top year after year. It is one of the longest current streaks for a public school in Division I.

Volleyball will be entering into the playoffs next week after they finish what has been a very successful season when they take on SK down on their home turf. SK and NK are two of the top contenders in the state so it should prove to be a tight contest.

Golf ended their season with Coach Marcone leading the team to a Division 1 championship and finishing 4th overall in the state tournament. Led by seniors Alex Burke, Owen Heath, Adam Southworth and Justin Pratt, the team had a great season just edging out Prout and Chariho for the Division title, their 3rd in four years.

The track team will be competing in their state championship meet this weekend. We have a number of top athletes and I know next week’s report will contain all state news for several of our kids.

Weekly Athletic Update

NKHS Sailing Team is headed to Nationals!

On April 28th, NK tied for first for the O'Day Trophy, New England's Fleet Racing Championship and National Qualifier. The team is led by 4 senior captains: Lee Dumaliang, Fiona Chirstie, Rachel Bryer and Amina Brown. They will all be headed to Nationals in Chicago this weekend along with fellow seniors Matt Gibbs and Molly Sylvia as well as juniors Emma Vogel and Megan Bamford. This is the first time the team has ever qualified for nationals so both sailors and alumni alike are incredibly excited. The team has been working incredibly hard in and out of the season to be ready for this huge event, which for many is the culmination of their high school sailing career. Andrew Sayre and Gary Largess, former NK sailors and the team's new coaches, are thrilled with the team's accomplishments and are looking forward to some great sailing in Chicago. This is a milestone for the team as a whole and it will raise the bar for years to come. This won't be the last time nationals sees NK Sailing!

NK Boys’ Track Team wins Division Championships! Coach Charlie Breagy and company continue to do what they do best… Win! The Boys Track Team had a perfect season in Southern Division, going 7-0. NK rolled over the competition in the Southern Division Champions Coaches Meet on Monday. Wins came from the 4X100M team of Nick Tierney, Nich Chavalier, Austin DeGregory and Zach Emrich. Individual wins came from Zach Emtich in the 200 meter and 400 meter. Sophomore Joe Craven won the 800M, Ben Stewart in the 300M and Connor Hayward in the pole vault. Congratulations to the boys outdoor track team!

                      •

NK Girls Track Team wins Division Championships! After defeating SK during the dual meet season, perennial power house and favorite SK wasn’t ready to give up the Divisional Title to the Skippers, but NK Coach Chabot had other ideas. The team was led by Jaxine Wolfe winning the high jump, Maria Bolibruch winning the 100 meter hurdles, and Aisha McAdams winning the 1500 meters. The team also took first place in the 100 meter relay and the 800 meter relay. When the final scores were tallied NK walked away with the victory by only 1.5 points! Now on to the State Championships!

                      •

NK Softball Team is 10-0: Kristina Rodriguez had two hits, two RBI and scored a run and Amy Augenstein was 2-for-3, scored twice and added a RBI as North Kingstown defeated Cranston West, 9-4, in Division I. The Skippers improve to 10-0.

Unified Basketball Team: The Skippers won the first round of the playoffs against Cranston West, 36-34. Coach Maroni states: “It was an exciting, overtime win that went right to the last second. Everyone contributed and played tough hard, defense. The team’s next game is today @ 3:30.

NK Volleyball Team: A few words from Team Captain Aidan Murphy: As of now, we are 8-2 and it has been an interesting season. Ever since the SK game, we have been pulling off consecutive victories. We are still ironing out the unforced and mental errors, but that will come in due time. In regards to energy and movement, we have drastically improved and it is beyond pleasing to see us as a team coming together and staying amped. Adding Garret Bucklin to the front row this season has been extraordinary and beneficial to the team. We have also seen major improvements with Alex Quarella's front row hitting. In our most recent game against Cranston East, Bobby Campbell stepped up as both a back row and front row player; I am sure he will continue his solid efforts on the court. Today we play Mount Saint Charles and it will not be easy; they are number 1 in their division. With that said, I feel that we, as a team, are ready to take on the challenge and continue our winning streak.

NK Golf Team in 2nd Place: The Golf Team is 2-0-1 this week. NK defeated Chariho / So. Kingstown @ Jamestown Golf Course on Wednesday and then tied Coventry @ Coventry Pines. The team record is 8-1-1 and is currently in 2nd place in the Southern Division.

From the Coaches’ Corner:

Tennis Coach Mathew Marion: “Senior Chris Mellon played his first ever singles varsity tennis match last week, against Cranston West and won in a third set tiebreaker: 7-5, 5-7, 10-7. He showed excellent sportsmanship and great athleticism. He arrives early to practice every day and stays late. He works really hard in practice 7 days a week and is extremely positive towards his teammates and coaches. He is a great addition to the varsity team this year moving up from JV.”

                      •

Captain of the Lacrosse Team, Cameron Fugere: “The lacrosse Team played Portsmouth High School last Friday April 26th. The team came out flat and Portsmouth gained a big lead going into the second half. By the middle of the second half NK really started to pick up the pace and made it a close game ending with a 9-7 loss to Portsmouth high school. Their next game is Friday at Mosses Brown.

NK Boys Baseball played East Greenwich on Wednesday in what was billed as one of the best games of the week. NK ended any doubt as to who was the better team beating EG 11-2. Coach Gormleys’ Team is only one game out of first place. Their next home game is Friday against Barrington.

                      •

Their last three games they have scored 38 runs and only allowed 7! NK play Chariho today at 4:00.  They are  currently in first place with a 9-0 record. The dual meet season has come to a close as the team gets ready for Class and State Championships. The boys will be competing in the Rick Schomp Invitational this Saturday.

                      •

                      •

The Boys Volleyball Team had a tough match up against East Providence. We quickly went up 2 games to 0 but East Providence breathed some life into their game by winning the next two games. NKHS Athletics Weekly Athletic Update

The Boys Track Team increased their unbeaten record to 7-0 beating Chariho and South Kingstown on Monday.
Zach Emrich led the team again winning the 100M, 200M and the 400M. Zach also anchored the 4X100M relay for another win. Most improved was Rees Tillotson, who won the long jump in 19 feet 11 inches.
Other winners included Dallin Smith (1500M) Joe Craven (800M), Ben Stewart (300M) Rees Tillotson (Long Jump), Alex Madoian (Hammer), Connor Hayward (Pole Vault) and Ben Lee (High Jump). The 4X400M relay team also ran the fastest time in the state this year with a time of 3:34.5 seconds.

The Baseball Team won 3 games over vacation. Their league record now stands at 4-1. Pitching and defense have been the strengths of this year’s team. The team has only allowed 5 runs in 5 league games; this is the lowest points allowed in the division. NK's defense has been outstanding with only 4 errors. If you would like to catch a game, they are playing at home tomorrow at 4:00.

The Golf Team played in two tournaments over vacation placing 5th in the McCampbell Cup and 4th place in the Challenge Cup. The team won its first league match vs. SK and EWG. Justin Pratt had the low score of 40. NK Team total 174, SK had a team total of 178, and EWG had 214.

The NK Girls Track and Field Team is undefeated this dual meet season with one meet to go. NK beat South Kingstown who has been undefeated during the duel meet season for over ten years! Great job girls!

The Boys Lacrosse Team lost to Barrington on Tuesday night and stands with a 2-4 record. Their next home game is tomorrow @ 7:00 against Portsmouth.

Volleyball update from Team Captain Aidan Murphy:
We have a lot of work cut out for us this season. We started strong against teams such as Chariho, as well as new to division 1 teams such as Pilgrim and EWG. When it came to our recent games against Coventry and South Kingstown, we fell short; through my eyes, because we lack the consistency and energy as the match progresses. When people say volleyball is a mental sport, they are not kidding; we beat ourselves up too much, however, we do have the ability to overcome that, and we do have the ability to beat Coventry and South Kingstown. We have to focus on eliminating mental errors, as well as unforced errors. I have been playing with these boys for three years and it has been an awesome experience. With that said I know we can overcome all of these obstacles as long as we stay positive and stay moving!

The North Kingstown Boys Tennis Team had a tough loss to Barrington yesterday. They currently have a 2-4 record. The team plays at Cranston today at 3:30.

The Unified Basketball Team won a hard fought game, going back and forth against Pilgrim. The game remained close until the final 4 minutes when we were able to pull away and win. The final score 55-42 with Justin Kilgore, Brandon Hildebrandt, and Zac Brady leading the way. The game moved our record to 5-1 with our final game next Thursday at home against Hendricken at 3:30.

The Girls Softball Team had two big wins this week over Westerly 6-0 and Tolman 8-0. Taylor Butler was great on the mound. NK had strong hitting performances by Kristina Rodrigues and Heather Jackson. NK is currently in second place with a 6-0 record.

The Girls Lacrosse Team is currently in second place with an overall record of 5-2.

Attached is the schedule for next week.

NKHS conducted a lockdown drill today in conjunction with the North Kingstown Police Department. The drill lasted from approximately 9:00 to 9:10 am. Again, this was a drill, required as part of our emergency protocol procedures.

  • There will not be any late buses on Thurs. April 11th. The Academic Resource Center and office detention will be cancelled. Please check with advisors and coaches regarding all other activities.

  • Congratulations to NKHS music teacher Mrs. Norma Caiazza who was invited to perform with the Boston Symphony Orchestra & Chorus tomorrow at Carnegie Hall, NY, this week.

  • Also, congratulations to seniors Jesse-Ray Leich and Nick Tierney who will be performing with the All-Eastern Honors Band this weekend. They will be performing in Hartford, CT at the Eastern Conference for Music Educators. Only three Rhode Island students were chosen to perform in this ensemble!

  • When we return from April break we will be providing detailed updates for seniors and their families regarding graduation and end of year information. June is approaching quickly!

  • Join us this Sunday from 12-4 PM in the NKHS Cafeteria for the Class of 2015 Cupcake Wars. Teams from all over NK will be competing for Best Themed, People’s Choice and Best Tasting Cupcake. Entry is free, cupcakes for purchase!

  • North Kingstown High School is sponsoring our spring blood drive on Thursday April 11th in the high school auditorium from 7:45am until 3pm. Students who are 16 years or older, are eligible to participate - All students under 18 must have a permission form signed by their parent or guardian. Students may sign up now in the clinic or cafeteria beginning April 8th. In the past, our school has received first place awards for participation in this event. Let’s keep up the good work. Each pint donated can save up to 3 lives. Give the gift of life.

  • Please remember to send in early dismissal notes with your child and remind your child to drop off the early dismissal notes to the Assistant Principals’ office. The clerk will give your child an early dismissal pass to show the teacher at the appropriate time. This prevents lost instruction time when teachers are interrupted by a phone call for a student who did not bring in a note to school.

  • There are about 135 yearbooks left for sale. All books must now be purchased from Mrs. Kenworthy in room 304 during Day 2 Advisory. The cost is $65, cash, check or money order.

      Contact Elizabeth_Kenworthy@nksd.net with any questions.

  • AP preregistration will be held in the Library during advisory on Tuesday, May 9th and Wednesday, May 10th. You must preregister BEFORE taking the test.

On Tuesday, May 9th will be for last names beginning A thru L

On Wednesday, May 10th will be for last names beginning M thru Z

  • The Wickford Sailing Association would like to announce a road race fundraiser on Sunday, April 7th. WSA partners with the NKHS Sailing Team sharing equipment and their facility, so this fundraiser actually benefits the NKHS team as well.

Race Registration information can be found on the attached flyer or at: http://tinyurl.com/QP10mRegister

  • Attention Junior Parents: The deadline for registering for the May 4th SAT’s is April 5th. If applicable, please register your child online via www.collegeboard.org. The last test date for SAT’s this school year will be June 1st which has a May 7th registration deadline.

  • Scholarships for Senior/Athletes: Please log onto the nkathletics.org website to find scholarship opportunities for Senior Athletes. The Monica Scholarship is awarded to two individuals who were members of the Varsity Soccer team. The Schongold Scholarship is awarded to one individual who was a member of the Football, Basketball or Track teams. And finally the NK Booster Club awards multiple scholarships to eligible student athletes. You can find the applications under the "Files & Links" tab on the website. Completed forms are due to the Guidance office by April 25, 2013. If you should have any questions please email them to nkboosterclub@gmail.com.

  • Attention juniors and their parents: The National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) is sponsoring a college fair on Saturday, April 27th from noon to 3 pm at the RI Convention Center in Providence. Representatives from more than 225 two-year and four-year colleges will participate in this fair. College admission representatives will be on hand to answer key questions. In addition, students will be able to pick up literature, and hear first-hand about the various programs available at each school.

Students will receive a brochure in advisory next week, which lists all the schools that will be in attendance so you can plan ahead. To make the best use of your time at the Fair, visit www.gotomyncf.com to register for a personal bar code. When you visit the college booths, the reps will scan your bar code which will leave you more time to engage in one-on-one conversation. The more prepared you are for the college fair, the more you will get out of it.

If the 27th does not work with your schedule, NACAC is also sponsoring a college fair on Tuesday, April 30 from 9 am to 12:00 pm and from 6 pm to 8:30 pm. In additon, the fair will be open on Wednesday, May 1st from 9 am to 12:00 pm. This fair will be held at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center. You can use the same website to register for this location (www.gotomyncf.com).

Weekly Athletic Update

"Winter Sports Awards Night" is this Sunday, April 7th @6:00

The Girls' Softball Team is off to a good start with a decisive win over East Greenwich. The final score was 7-2. The Lady Skippers are 2-0.....Nice job girls!

The Girls' Lacrosse Team had a tough win over Cumberland with a final score of 6-4. They now stand at 3-0.

The Boys' NK Track Team dominated the competition with wins over Narragansett (113-39), East Greenwich (127-26) and Prout (116-38).

Not to be outdone by the boys, the Girls' Track Team dominated as well, with wins over Narragansett (126-27), East Greenwich (72-52), and Prout (113-40). The boys and girls track team have a combined total of almost 200 student/athletes that compete. That is an amazing number!

The Boys' Tennis Team is 1-0 with a win over Lincoln, (5-2). The Skippers next home game is today at 3:30 against Bishop Hendricken.

The Unified Basketball Team had a close game with Chariho yesterday. Chariho came out with some strong defense against the Skippers which limited NK's ability to put some points on the board. NK coaches Myles Point, Briand Lacroix and Peter Maroni regrouped the team and got more aggressive on offense. Brandon Hildebrandt had some breakaways late in the game that helped NK pull through with the win. Great job unified players!
