Answers
1)  Q Who is Mrs. Franco?
A
I have been teaching in North Kingstown since 1997. Before that I taught fifth and sixth grade at The Gordon School in Riverside, RI, and fourth and fifth grade in my home state of Connecticut. In North Kingstown, I was a Special Ed. teacher at Hamilton Elementary, Fishing Cove Elementary, and Wickford Middle Schools. When the district decided to reconfigure the elementary schools to grades K-5, I decided to get back to classroom teaching. I was very happy when a third grade position became available. The third grade curriculum is really fun, especially the Science kits!

Personally, I live in Hope Valley with my husband and two kids, Jillian and Joey. Jillian is a sophomore at The Prout School and Joey is in 7th grade at Monsignor Clarke School. As a family, we love to go hiking, camping, and taking canoe trips down the Wood River near my home. We also love the beach and can often be found at Misquamicut Beach!

In my free time, my favorite thing to do is read! I love getting lost in a good book with a hot cup of tea and a fuzzy blanket. My favorite genre is historical fiction because you can learn about history while enjoying a good story. I also love to read children's fiction, everything from picture books to young adult novels. Some of my favorite authors are Gary Paulsen, David Weisner, Lois Lowry, Maurice Sendak, Tomie De Paola, Kevin Henkes, James Marshall, Russell Hoban, and Avi. We'll be reading lots of stories by these authors and more!

I am really excited to be your teacher and look forward to a fun-filled year!
2)  Q How can parents get in touch with Mrs. Franco?
A
The best way to get in touch with me is to use email. My email address is cathe_franco@nksd.net or you can click on the link to left called "Contact Form." This will send your message to me automatically through the email network here at school. If you do not have access to a computer on a regular basis, you can always call the school @ 541-6360 and leave a message for me with the secretary. I usually get these messages by the end of the day and will return your call after school. Please leave a number at which you can be reached between 3:10 and 3:30.
3)  Q What is the homework like in third grade?
A
Every night, Monday through Thursday, third graders have homework. This homework is usually a spelling assignment and a math assignment. These assignments should take no longer than 30 minutes in total to complete. If a particular assignment is confusing or frustrating thus making it hard to complete, please write a quick note to me. This way, I will know that particular assignment was difficult. In addition, each third grade student is required to complete at least 20 minutes of reading each night. In your homework folder, there will be a reading log onto which you list what was read and a place for parents to sign.
4)  Q What happens if I don't do my homework?
A
Homework is such a big part of learning! It helps you practice what you learned that day. ALL HOMEWORK WILL BE COMPLETED BY EACH STUDENT WITH ONLY A FEW EXCEPTIONS:

1. If you have trouble getting your homework done, but really tried hard to complete it, just have a grown-up write me a note.

2. If you have a good reason for not doing your homework, again, have a grown-up write me a note.

HOWEVER.... If you CHOSE not to do your homework AT HOME, then you will need to stay in for lunch and/or recess to get it done AT SCHOOL. As you can see, the homework needs to get done, so it is much better to spend a little time at home doing it rather than missing lunch or recess with your friends!
5)  Q What are FRIDAY FOLDERS?
A
Friday Folders contain two things: Friday notes from me and collected/corrected work sent home.

Friday Notes: These memos have a weekly message that keep parents up-to-date on what is occurring in our class, in third grade, and in the school. Important dates/reminders are also included. In addition, parents get a weekly report on how their child is performing in class. IMPORTANT: Friday notes must be signed and returned on the following MONDAY.

Collected/corrected Work: Generally, student work from the week will be sent home in the Friday Folder to minimize the amount of times papers come home during the week. The only exception will be the spelling tests which are taken on Fridays. They will be sent home the following week. Most student work is given a grade by which parents can guage how their child is performing. (See question regarding grading in third grade.) All work sent home in the Friday folder can be kept at home.
